The Health & Safety of Great Britain - A pledge...

The HSE are asking companies to play their part in reducing accidents, work related illness, not to trivialise health and safety and to take a common sense approach to health and safety.  If you like us, like the sound of this then please sign up here:-

March 2009

The Health and Safety Executive is to recruit an extra 25 construction safety inspectors. They are being hired on a 2-year fixed term contract from June of this year and will be concentrating on refurbishment work.

The HSE says the initiative is particularly aimed at boosting inspection of refurbishment sites. These currently represent one of the most dangerous areas of construction work.

The additional inspectors will prioritise preventative work rather than the investigation of accidents. They will serve enforcement notices and assist with prosecutuions.

They will receive special bespoke training so that they can swiftly become active on site.

February 2009

Last year (2007/08) over half (52%) of the workers who died on construction sites across the UK worked in refurbishment, repair and maintenance, in line with a similar shocking statistic the previous year (2006/07). Nationally during February 2009, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) aims to inspect 1500 refurbishment sites across Great Britain, to tackle poor health and safety standards in support of its Shattered Lives and Hidden Killer campaigns.
